The S3 will screen and consolidate your transportation request.
Then, he determines the number and type of vehicles you will need to
meet operational requirements.
After determining the operational
requirements, he directs the subordinate truck companies to furnish
these vehicles.
Combat Arms Support Coordination
Coordinate combat arms
support through the S3 (or division
transportation officer) to the division TOC or Corps Support Command
(COSCOM).
Planning a convoy operation requires high quality, aggressive staff
action on the part of the truck unit staff. You only have a limited
period to reconnoiter the route.
You must give instructions to
subordinate element commanders and other supervisory personnel.
You
must also achieve final coordination with the security force
commander.
You must contact all tactical units whose areas of responsibility the
convoy will pass through.
When contacting the units, find out what
restrictions and requirements are placed on convoys in each area and
what convoy support can be furnished. This support could include the
following:
Security forces.
Escort vehicles.
Vehicle recovery and repair.
Engineer road repair.
Medical support.
You must be able to resolve any problems that may interfere with the
convoy. After collecting the restrictions and requirements placed on
the convoy, you can complete the planning for fire support, road
outposting and clearing, escort forces, and engineer support.
At this time, you must coordinate the following support requirements
with the S3:
Military and Civil Police Escort.
The MPs and civil police
(host nation) are used to assist in convoy control within the
staging area and en route.
Use them to provide forward
crossing traffic.
