to regulate net operation.
A collective call is similar to a net
call, but it is used to group two or more (but not all) of the net
stations. A collective call is useful when several stations must be
called frequently on matters that are of no concern to other net
stations.
All call signs are changed periodically according to prearranged
instructions.
The period of time in which they remain in effect
depends on the degree of security desired. These instructions, with
a scheduled list of call signs and alternate call signs, are
published in the command SOI.
A change of call signs involves a
change in operating frequency, which is an additional countermeasure
against enemy interception and traffic analysis.
You must exercise care when assigning call signs to individual
stations in the same radio net. Assigning unsuitable call signs can
cause confusion and an inefficient net operation.
For example,
similar call signs, such as 6P7X, 6P6X, or A67P, are difficult to
distinguish during periods of poor reception.
The wrong operator,
hearing only part of the call, might assume that the call is for him
and add to the confusion by answering in place of the correct
station.
To avoid this, assign call signs within nets that have a
little or no duplication of the same letters or numbers.
You must now provide the division TOC and the artillery operations
fires can be devised.
You must prepare a map overlay to show
reference points and concentrations planned by the artillery.
You
must also identify no-fire zones on the map overlay.
Fire can be
called for and adjusted from these points much more quickly and with
greater accuracy than if unplanned.
If the artillery unit cannot
provide support along the entire route, note its range limitations on
the map.
You should also coordinate and rehearse actual calls for
fire missions and adjustments of fire, even though these calls are
standard throughout the Army. You must coordinate fire support with
the artillery officer who is the authority on this subject. He will
plan available artillery resources to the convoy's best advantage.
Another element of fire support that you should plan is the use of
gun ships and aerial rocket artillery (ARA).
Through coordination,
these gun ships and ARAs can be either on alert status or overhead
while the convoy is en route. In either situation, you must ensure
control personnel.
You should establish a means of marking the
target to obtain the full benefit of these weapons systems. You must
in calling for and adjusting fire.
