Locomotives are classified under the Whyte Classification System
according to their wheel arrangement. The Whyte System is based upon a
group of three or more digits. The first digit indicates the number of
leading wheels a locomotive may have; the second, the number of driving
wheels; and the third, the number of trailing wheels. The absence of
leading or trailing wheels is shown by a zero.
All the wheels on the Army dieselelectric locomotives are driving
wheels. The 0660 has two 6wheel trucks (the "6's"), each of which has
three axles with two wheels each, but no leading or trailing wheels (the
"0's"). The 0440 has two 4wheel trucks (the "4's"), each containing two
axles with two wheels each, but no leading or trailing wheels (the "0's").
