To determine the quantity of coal required for steam

locomotives, use the formulas given in subparagraphs a and b below.

a. Road engines.

5.5. OILBURNING STEAM LOCOMOTIVES

The method for determining the quantity of fuel required for

oilburning steam locomotives, both road and switch, is the same as

that for coalburning locomotives. However, only 5 percent is added

to allow for contingencies because the losses in heat energy are less

when using fuel oil than when using coal.
